The History Of Liverpool Football

Introduction

In 1892, John Houlding, the owner of the Anfield Stadium wanted Everton FC to play on the arena in exchange for a lease. After the club refused the proposal, he decided to found his own football team: Livepool FC. After Tom Watson was hired, the team became more successful. They joined the First Division League in 1900, and won the championship after only one year, repeating the performance 5 years later, in 1906.

The worst football Liverpool ever played is probably in the 10’s and the beginning of the 20’s, until they won two consecutive titles in 1922 and 1923. The success was regained in the late 40’s until the mid 50’s, with the winning of another title in 1947, followed by the FA Cup final against Arsenal, the first time the team played on Wembley. Only a few years later, the team relegated to the Second Division.

In hope of returning to the First Division, the team hired Bill Shankly as the new manager. He managed to promote in his 3rd year, after winning the division by eight points. The 60’s was a rejuvenating period for the club, winning two more back to back titles in 1963 and 1964 and the first FA Cup in 1965.
The best football Liverpool ever played is probably in the 70’s, even though Shankly retired. He was replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley. They won the FA Cup in 1974, the First Division Championship 5 times in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1979 and 1980, but the biggest win in football Liverpool ever had until that time happened in 1977, when the team won the European Cup for the first time.

In the 80's, they managed to remain a successful club. Paisley retired and handed the job to Joe Fagan, who, in his first season, led the club to the first ever double, being the first English club to achieve winning 2 major trophies in one season. In 1985 they went to the European Cup final again, only this time, they lost to Juventus 1-0.

Due to two major events, the success in football Liverpool had during that period was overshadowed. In the European Cup final against Juventus, as Liverpool fans breached a fence separating the two sides, a retaining wall collapsed, causing 39 people to loose their lives. Most of them were Juventus fans. Liverpool was banned from the competition for 6 years, after receiving an initial penalty of 10 years. In the FA Cup semi final, many people got crushed against perimeter fencing and 94 fans were killed.
