How to Get Your Credit Back in Shape
Removing bad credit credit cards from your credit report can be a difficult task, but it is not impossible to do. In some cases, it is just a matter of making sure that your credit report contains accurate information. In other cases, you may need to negotiate with creditors to get bad credit credit cards off your report so that they don't inhibit your ability to get credit in the future. If you can't negotiate on your own, you may need to bring in a professional who can help you.
Step 1
Order your credit report from all credit bureaus in your country. In some places, such as the United States, you can get one free credit report from each agency every year. In other places, you may have to pay to receive your reports. Review each report for information about your bad credit credit cards and accounts. Is the information correct? In some cases, you may find that the bad credit credit card information on your reports isn't accurate. For example, an identity thief may have opened up accounts in your name and then not paid them. Or you may have paid your bills, but the bad credit credit card company that you worked with submitted bad information to credit bureaus.
Step 2
After finding inaccurate information about your bad credit credit cards in your report, follow the protocol in your country for getting this information removed. In many places, such as the United States, you can challenge the information yourself by contacting the credit bureaus directly and then asking them to remove the incorrect information. You can also contact the bad credit credit card companies and ask them to take off inaccurate information. Be prepared to provide documentation of your claims that the accounts or cards don't belong to you or that you did pay them on time. This documentation may include police reports or copies of cancelled checks.
Step 3
If the information in your credit report is correct and you actually did fail to pay the amounts due on your credit card bills, you will have to try and find a way to settle your bad credit credit card accounts. You can try doing this on your own by contacting each company and asking if you can pay off your account, either partially or in full, in exchange for the company removing the bad credit credit card account information from your reports. Be sure to get the agreement in writing before actually sending any money.
Step 4
If the bad credit credit card companies refuse to work with you, contact a professional debt settlement company or credit counselor. In some cases, they may be able to do a better job than you can at getting information changed or removed from your credit reports. Be prepared to pay all or some of your debt as part of the process of getting your finances in order and removing bad credit credit card debt information from your reports. In some cases, creditors may be willing to remove some, but not all the negative information from your report. If this happens, you may still have damaged credit, but it won't be as bad as it was before.
Step 5
Keep in mind that there is usually a limit as to how long bad credit credit credit card information remains on your reports. In many places, this information only stays on your reports for seven years or so. Eventually, it will drop off your report, enabling you to get a fresh start on your credit.
