The first thought that comes to mind when speaking of beach water is the ocean water encountered when visiting the sandy beaches. Beach water is found in many parts of the world and the water can be different depending on the coastal areas. There are certain things that everyone should know about beach water.

Beach water provides a lot of fun and recreation for many people on a daily basis. Whether you are swimming, skiing, or sailing the waters, it’s always good to know about the beach water surrounding you.

Some people will not swim in the ocean, but there are many that do. Beach water can be safe to swim in, but there are certain safety precautions you should adhere to when swimming in beach water. First of all, beach water has limited visibility in many areas. This applies even when you are close to shore. If you are not familiar with the beach you are visiting, it’s always a good idea to wade through the water before you take that initial dive. Diving head-first is never a good idea. You must always be aware of the condition of the beach water and conditions of the tide.

While you may have a great time and enjoy swimming in the beach water, there are some dangers. It is possible to be caught in a strong current or rip tide. If this were to happen, you need to keep your wits about you, stay calm and parallel to the short. If your swimming skills are strong you will need to swim parallel to the short until you are out of the tide and immediately head to the shoreline. If you get in a crisis situation, try to get the attention of other people that may be on the sandy area of the beach.

It’s not difficult to determine whether you are caught in a rip tide. The best indication is when you find yourself further from the shore than you think you should be. Do not struggle against the rip tide. It can tire you out quickly and cause disastrous circumstance.

Safety in beach water is of utmost importance and those are just a couple of safety tips should you decide to swim in the ocean.

Here are some other general facts about beach water that some people may not realize:

1. Drinking salty beach water can cause dehydration and kidney failure. This does not necessarily mean you cannot consume any of the beach water surrounding you, should you get in a crisis situation. Many people have been stranded in the ocean and survived. It has been said that you can drink the water in minimal amounts, not to exceed 32 oz per day. This does not mean you are to absolutely drink the water. Although it has been proven to be safe in small amounts, you would definitely want to resort to other methods of staying hydrated.


2. Be aware of your surroundings while in and around beach water. The ocean is full of different sea creatures that can cause injury. Before visiting any coastal area it is good to familiarize yourself with creatures that most commonly inhabit that area. Awareness and knowledge can help make your beach water adventure a safe one.

Those are some important tidbits of information that everyone should know about beach water. Visiting the beach should be fun and entertaining. Maintaining safety will give you the peace of mind you need during your visit to the beach.
