Introduction
Newark Liberty International Airport is located southwest of Manhattan, and it was one of America’s first major airports. Newark is run by New York and New Jersey’s Port Authority, and it is considered the busiest airport in terms of flights. Although JFK still has the most at 46.5 million in 2010, Newark had 33.1 million compared to LaGuardia’s 46.5 million. This outruns LaGuardia airport by 13.4 million.
History
The history of Newark Airport is centered around 68 acres of land by the Passaic River opening in October of 1928. In 1935, Amelia Earhart dedicated it as the first terminal for commercial airlines. During World War II, Newark was taken over by the United States Army for logistics controls and operations. A German aircraft that was captured, HMS Reaper, was brought to Newark in 1945 for analysis. Then in 1948, the New York and New Jersey Port Authority took the airport back investing and expanding in more hangars and terminals. Another major enlargement happened in the 1970s adding the current A, B, and C terminals.
In the '80s, People Express negotiated a deal with the Port Authority to use one of the terminals which served as an air terminal and their offices. Virgin Atlantic Airways began its overseas flights to London in 1984 creating competition with JFK’s airport. Then in 1986 Federal Express opened a hub. In 2001, Newark offered non-stop flights to Hong Kong and in 2005 to Beijing and Delhi Beijing and in 2009 to Shanghai.
Features
Benefits provided by Newark Airport include three large passenger terminals. The terminals include shopping outlets and food. On site is a Marriott hotel that offers public and guest room wireless internet along with shuttles that will take passengers to and from the airport. Although the Marriott is the only onsite hotel is a variety of other hotels close by such as the Hilton Newark Airport Hotel along with the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel.
Transportation benefits of Newark include an AirTrain or monorail system that connects to the New Jersey Transit system, Olympia Trails and Airporter bus service and of course taxis and limousines. Taxis and limousines will offer a flat rate but one should be aware that a taxi may refuse to take you outside of the five boroughs.
For art lovers, Newark airport displays murals from Arshile Gorky, an Armenian American who was an abstract expressionism. Gorky was one of the artists that were employed by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project.
Tips and comments
Newark is considered a safe airport although there have been incidents along with accidents. The most commonly known is the hijack of Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. This was the flight where the passengers fought back and the plane crashed into a Shanksville, Pennsylvania empty field. In 2006, a Continental Airline Flight landed on a taxiway instead of the designated runway. On January the 3rd of 2010 a passenger went through the passenger loading side without going through the security check, which caused the evacuation of the area for approximately six hours.
