Introduction

JFK covers 4,930 acres and is located on Jamaica Bay in Queens County, New York. It is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Airlines from 50 countries and over 100 airline companies operate out of JFK on a daily basis.

History

The history of airport JFK consisted of preliminary plans for a moderate 1,000-acre flight terminal, but by the time development was complete it was five times that size. JFK was originally called Idlewild Airport in reference to a golf course it was built over. It was then named after a Queens National Guard member in 1942 and in 1948 it was named New York International Airport, Anderson Field and was not given the name of JFK until 1963 after the assassinated President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. In 1963, the flight terminal was rededicated Robert F. Kennedy Worldwide Airport in memory of the country's 35th chief executive. Today, JFK is the country's major international entrance, with more than 80 air carriers managing from its entrance. The original constructions cost around $150 million and another 6.1 billion has been invested by The Port Authority.

Features include 125 gates, a ring of taxiways with a total length of 125 miles, a tower that reaches 321 feet which includes a wind and radar alert system. Parking consists of 18,000 various located spaces which includes long and short term, parking garages and a lot for cell phone calls.

New York offers a variety of ways of getting to JFK. There is a bus and subway connection, an airport shuttle with includes New York Airport Shuttle and ETS Air Shuttle, taxis and All County Express. Coming from the city you can catch the MTA NYC bus which will cost around $2.25, the JFK Air Train with will stop at each terminal and cost around $5, New York Airport Express Bus for a cost of around $15, Super Shuttle for a cost of around $25, Go Air link Shuttle with a cost around $20, a taxi for around $50 or a limousine for around $60. If riding the bus you will need to purchase a Metro Card. These cards are available for one ride for one day to unlimited rides for up to seven days. Up to three children may ride for free in they are less than 44 inches.

Another option is by foot. Walking is common in New York and the sidewalks are normally smooth for walking on. As you walk you will also be able to enjoy the city. When crossing streets it is recommend waiting for the light although New York natives are known for jaywalking it can be dangerous if you misjudge the traffic’s speed of oncoming cars. If there is a fire truck or ambulance coming in your direction, be sure to allow them leeway.
