Introduction

Nebraska football is widely known around the world due to its winning history and traditions. The athletic teams and squads in Nebraska are prominent for their excellence in their respective sports and fields. Their football teams are constantly ranked as one of the nation’s finest and best squads. The Nebraska Cornhuskers football squad is the most successful football college program for the past five decades. There are only a few football programs that could match up to the winning ways of this football program.

Nebraska football has superb training programs that develop perennial powerhouse teams since their existence. This superb football league started on a Thanksgiving Day during the year 1890. They were able to defeat the Omaha YMCA with a score of 10-0 during their first game. Before they were called Cornhuskers, they used other names such Nebraskans, Bugeaters, Tree Planters, Old Gold Knights, Antelopes and The Rattlesnake Boys. They finally stuck with the name Cornhuskers during the year 1900.

Championships: The Cornhuskers were able to claim forty-three conference titles and five national championships. They were to win the national titles during the years 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997. They were the first team in college football history since Notre Dame in 1946 to 1949 to win three national titles in four seasons. They are also the first back-to-back champions by any Division 1-A institution since Oklahoma in the years 1956-57. The Cornhuskers were able to post a record of 60-3-0 during the seasons 1993 up to 1997. Several football experts and analysts have considered the 1995 Nebraska football Cornhusker to be the best college football team ever assembled.

Undefeated Seasons without National Championships: The Nebraska Cornhuskers were able to stay undefeated in five seasons that they did not win the national championships. Those seasons include 1902, 1903, 1913, 1914 and 1915. They were undefeated for 34 games during the years 1912 up to 1916. The coach during such tenure was Ewald O. Stiehm.

Tommy Frazier: Tommy Frazier was the quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers when they won back-to-back championships during 1994 and 1995. Several experts have considered him to be one of the best quarterback in the history of college football. He was even selected as a back-up quarterback for the NCAA Football All-Century Team for a certain magazine. However, he never made it to the big league due to blood clots.

Retired Jerseys: The Cornhuskers have retired twenty-two jersey numbers from their previous players such as Mike Rozier, Eric Ouch, Trev Alberts, Grant Wistorm, Tom Novak, Johnny Rodgers and many more. They were some of the infamous names in the history of Nebraska football.

Heisman Trophy: Aside from team championships and titles, there were also several individual awards that were obtained by some of the former Cornhuskers. The Hiesman Trophy was won by three Nebraska football Cornhuskers since the award was practiced in college football. Players such as Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier and Eric Crouch were able to win such prestigious individual award.
