Scotland shares a long and rich history of playing professional football. Their history goes way back to 1872 when they played against England in the first ever International match. Football Scotland is governed by Scottish Football Association. Football Scotland is ranked 51 in FIFA ranking. Their highest ranking was 13 which they achieved in October, 2007. Scotland has few world class stadiums. The Hampden Park in Glasgow is referred to as the national stadium. The stadium has the capacity of 52, 000 spectators.

History about Scotland Football

The Scottish football team participates in all major football events like the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Cup. But they have not managed to go any further than the first round. But some of the remarkable achievement by Football Scotland came in 1967, when they defeated the 1966 World Cup winner England 3-2 in a close encounter. They also defeated the 1978 World Cup runners up Netherlands 3-2. These are the most noteworthy performances by Football Scotland. Scotland not being a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not participates in Olympics. Scotland supporters are known as “Tartan Army”.

Football Rivalries

When talking about football rivalries, nothing comes closer to the rivalry between Scotland and England. Both the teams have been in rivalry since the first International match. The first ever match was played at Glasgow in 1872. The rivalry owes a lot of significance to the conflict between the two countries which has been going on forever. Both the countries wanted to prove their superiority over the others. But the rivalry has somewhat undermined after annual fixture was cancelled in 1989. As of 2008, 110 matches have been played between the two teams. Out of which Football Scotland have won 41 and drew 24. The rest is won by England. The last match between the two sides was the Euro qualifier for 2000, played at Wembley Stadium where the Scottish team won by 1-0 but lost on aggregate 2-1.
