Save Money While Living Well in Home

It is possible to live well in home and save money at the same time. Learning to conserve is something that each person in home should learn how to do. This can range from something simple such as turning off a light when it is not needed to larger things that can be done in home to conserve energy and money. For example, one might lower the heat when in home and put on a sweatshirt. There are many ways that you and your family can live well in home while saving money. It just requires a new way of living and thinking about things.

Step 1

You do not have to spend a lot of money to have a good time. Sure, going to the movies, the amusement park and out to eat are all fun things to do. However, there are also fun things that can be done in home with the family. Plan a family game night. The initial cost of the games will be much less than the cost of going out. You can also have movie night in home instead of at the theater. Make your own popcorn and enjoy movies that the entire family will like.

Plan special dinners at home. To be fair, divide the work. This is a good way to get everyone involved. One or two people can cook, someone else can set the table and clean up after dinner. Not only will you save money by eating in home, but you will also be bringing the family closer together.

Step 2

Check out second hand stores and websites such as Craigslist for items such as outdoor play equipment, sporting goods, holiday decorations and even kids clothes. You may be surprised at some of the good quality items people are getting rid of for a fraction of what they cost when new.

During warm weather months, yard sales are another source of great deals. Babies and small children often outgrow clothing long before the items are worn. Take advantage of this fact by searching for gently worn items for your children. You can often get high quality boutique clothing for less than what you would pay for department store items. Holiday dresses and suits as well as Halloween costumes are all items that have usually only been worn once, buying them used is a good money saving option.

Step 3

Stop buying prepacked convenience foods. Frozen dinners are usually high prices for what you are getting. Rarely does a frozen dinner satisfy the one eating it, they are also most often loaded with salt and other unhealthy ingredients. A better and less expensive idea is to freeze leftovers into individual sized portions and freeze them.

Boxed foods are another item that while not always high priced, is loaded with salt, fats and other items you do not need. It is just as easy to make your own ground beef and pasta dishes as it is to use a packaged item. You also get more and can limit salt.

Step 4

Trade off babysitting duties with one or more other couples. This is a wonderful way for parents to get to spend time alone without the kids, without the cost of a babysitter. The kids also have a fun sleepover. Each couple takes a turn being the host for the children. The parents who have the children in home one week will be free to do what they want the next week, knowing their children are being cared for.

 

Step 5

Take day trips to free attractions. Neighborhood parks are fun for the family, and bike riding is another activity that the family can do together that does not cost money over the cost of the bikes and safety gear.

Host a barbecue in the backyard, invite friends to join in and bring a dish.
