Defense lawyers start their career as prosecutors in the state. The prosecutors are the agents of the state. In terms of criminal proceedings, the job for the lawyer defense is to defend his or her client by applying the law and cast doubt in the prosecution's case. It depends on the prosecutor to convince the doubt and prove the defendant's guilt. The lawyer does not need to prove the innocence of his client in defense because the law states that the person is innocent until proved him guilty. But if some evidences exist which can exonerate a client, then it depends on the lawyer defense to bring this evidence out whenever it is possible for him.

A lawyer should not knowingly promote a witness on the stand which can perpetrate a lie and nor should a lawyer knowingly lie to the court. For this reason, in terms of a highly profiled cases, it is usual that a lawyer defense won't want to know the client is guilty.
