Introduction
These days seniors may find themselves in need of some extra income. Or they may simply want something to do to keep active and to keep from being board. For these reason many are considering finding suitable senior jobs. Luckily, there are many senior jobs that can be found. After all seniors have much life experience to share. While it may take a bit of time to find senior jobs that fit in with the seniors lifestyle, it can be done.
Step 1
Have a professional write or update your resume and cover letter before applying for senior jobs. This is especially important if you have not worked for some time. An expert will know how to handle the large gaps in employment history. They will also be able to highlight your best skills. You will want the best resume you can possibly have in order to compete with younger applicants who may have recently gotten out of college.
Step 2
Register at temp agencies. You may have better luck finding senior jobs through a temporary agency. Sometimes these temporary jobs turn into full time positions.
Step 3
When applying for senior jobs or interviewing for these senior jobs positions, be sure to emphasis your life experiences. Point out your problem solving and organizational skills as well.
Step 4
Often senior jobs can be difficult to find, if you know someone who works in a company you would be interested in working with, discuss this. A friend or family member may be able to get you in the door for an interview. Even if you are not sure where you would like to work, make it known to friends and family that you are looking for a job. Someone may know of a place that is hiring that you would be perfect for.
Step 5
Search online for retirement boards. These boards are a way for seniors to get matched up with senior jobs. Register at the site and upload your resume. Check back often to review listings.
Step 6
Take note of the workers who are hired in places you visit every day. Look for businesses that seem to have suitable senior jobs. Some places that typically hire seniors are stores in need of cashiers, call centers, business in need of customer service. These are of course only a few of the senior jobs available. There are many more. Each person will have different possibilities, depending on one's skills and experience.
Step 7
When meeting with potential employers let them know that you are willing to work part time or on a temporary job. Allowing an employer know that your hours are flexible and that you do not mind temporary work may give you the advantage. Often those raising families and those who are still paying student loans and making mortgage payments cannot afford to work temporary or part time jobs. This is what makes these types perfect for senior jobs.
Step 8
Check with local government agencies for help. Many cities and towns have programs to help with senior jobs. They may offer training or other help to seniors looking for employment. These programs may have some great resources for you to take advantage of.
Step 9
Think about becoming a consultant. If you spent your working years in a particular field, you may be able to offer your expertise to those who are up and coming in the field. Consulting is one of the more popular senior jobs. You are your own boss and many seniors enjoy passing on their knowledge to the next generation.
Step 10
Join AARP. AARP has a program that helps to train and guide senior workers to senior jobs that they are able to do.
Tips
Do not get discouraged. Studies show that seniors looking for senior jobs have a longer period of waiting than those who are younger do. However, they do still find jobs eventually. Keep at it.
