Creating a Google Group

Introduction

People use the Internet for many different reasons. Connecting with others, and communicating with family, friends and loved ones are some of the main reasons a lot of people use the Internet. Google Groups is free and is currently available in many different languages.

Google Groups offer an interactive online environment where you can participate in online discussions related to specific subjects that interest you. You can create online and email groups, engage in discussions, have meetings or social events among members, and read group posts through your email and online application.

A Google Group has two different roles for users. Users are either participants or administrators. Participants are those who join the group and participate in discussions. Administrators are those who create the groups and manage the memberships and all group activities.

Creating a Google Group is an easy process you can complete online on the Google Groups homepage. If you don't have an account with Google, you will need to register for one. If you already have a Google account, you can just log in and click on the button that says “create a group.”

When you create a Google Group, you will be the administrator of the group and will be the one that manages the group memberships and activities. Begin creating a new Google Group by going to the homepage at www.groups.Google.com. Click on the button that says “new group” which will direct you to the page where you can create your group. Give your group description and go to the basic access setup section. Advanced settings will allow you to modify other settings within your group. Once you input the information required, you can simply click “create group” button and your group will be created.

Now that you have created your Google Group, you can return to the homepage and click on the button that says “my groups.” You will then be able to view a list of your groups. From there, you will be able to create or change your welcome message for the group. If your group doesn't yet have a welcome message, then you will need to create one. Make sure you save your message after it is created. A Google Group will need a warm welcome message that will be sent to those who join.

After your Google Group is created, you will also need to review and understand the permissions in your group. You can assign certain permission levels to certain people. Those permissions will determine what members and visitors can and cannot do within the group.

There are many actions that can be performed within a group and those actions are only able to be accessed by those that the administrator grants privileges to. When creating your Google Group you must remember to save the settings you select during the process. If you do not save the settings you chose, your preferences and setup of the application will not be saved.
