Introduction
Getting a surgical procedure can be both stressful on the body and on the mind. In order to prepare for surgery and assure to a good outcome, there are a couple rules you should follow. About 50 million Americans go under the knife per year for you reason or another. It is extremely important to prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically to ensure a smooth and easy surgery procedure.
Step 1
For any surgery procedure, you'll need to determine how its being paid for. If you have health insurance, you should always notify them of any upcoming surgeries and insurance companies differ in surgery requirements. You will need to ask both your doctor as well as your insurance company how to proceed with the authorization and how much the surgery will cost out of pocket, if anything.
Step 2
Before any surgery procedure, it's best to speak with the doctor who is performing the surgery. When you take the time out and receive a full description of what the surgery entails and discuss pain management after, then you wont be left confused about what to do after the surgery is completed.
Step 3
It is suggested that along with speaking to your doctor about your surgery procedure, that you also do some research on your own. That way, you can get a better understanding of what exactly will be done to you when you are under the knife. You also could get in touch with other people on medical forums or boards that have gone through the exact same surgery procedure as you are, then you can get a better grasp of understanding of what you're up against.
Step 4
Pre- Surgery Instructions:
- You should avoid showering no more than 12 hours prior to your surgery
- You will need to bring a written list of any medications you are currently on
- Obtain prescriptions for post-operative medications before surgery, to have them filled before the surgery procedure
- Have a responsible adult with you during the day of your surgery, to keep eye on your belongings and just to be there for moral support
Step 5
Pre-Surgery Checklist:
- Avoid wearing jewelery, this includes earrings and body piercings
- Make sure you have someone who is capable of driving you home after the surgery
- Make sure youve followed the instructions for not eating and drinking before the procedure
Tips
For any surgery procedure, you'll want to always make sure you at least have a couple days off of work or school for a full recuperation. However, if your doctor suggests that you need a long term medical leave from work or school, then you will need to follow his or her instructions. Depending on the specific surgery, you may be out of commission for anywhere from a day to a couple weeks.
Common Risks
Unfortunately, not all surgery procedures always go as planned and like anything in life, there are risks involved. Some of the common risks include anesthesia complications during surgery, bleeding problems during surgery, blood clots during surgery, delayed healing after the surgery procedure, and finally, difficulty breathing after the surgery.
