Laser Hair Removal Versus Waxing

Introduction

Waxing and laser hair removal are two of the most popular forms of hair removal or alternatives to shaving. There are pros and cons to each of these methods.

History

Laser hair removal has been experimented with for several years. In fact, it was only experimental for about twenty years before it was introduced to the public. It wasn't until the mid 1990's that laser hair removal was brought to the general public. Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin found in hair particles. Therefore, it's best on people with pale skin and dark hair. It's generally ineffective on anyone with lighter hair.

There are two primary methods of waxing. The first is called strip waxing, and it uses a wet wax combination spread in a thin layer over the skin. There is a cloth applied over the wax to ease removal. The cloth is then ripped off in a quick motion, against the grain of the hair. The second method is called hard waxing, and it involves a wax that hardens over time. It's applied in a thick layer, so no cloth is needed. This method of waxing is best for an individual that has sensitive skin.

Laser Hair Removal Vs. Waxing

The goal of laser hair removal is to permanently reduce hair. Laser hair removal is not a quick fix. While it is an effective way to remove hair, it is a process that must be done in roughly four to seven sessions, four to eight weeks apart. About ten days after the treatment process, the treated hairs will shed, and the patient will be smooth for a month or longer before needing to go to the next session. Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin that colors the hair, and therefore will not work on individuals who have light colored hair.

Waxing is a temporary form of hair removal, as it does nothing to prevent the hair from growing back. Generally it keeps the skin smooth for a couple of weeks before needing to be redone. The most common form of waxing is done with a thin strip of wax, and a cloth or paper strip. It's removed with a quick jerking motion, against the grain of the hair.

The patient should expect to feel pain with both laser hair removal and waxing, however they are different types of pain. The pain of laser hair removal can be eased with the use of a numbing cream or pain killers before the session. Waxing is more of a sudden, intense pain that lasts for short periods of time.

Conclusion

Neatness definitely comes into play when choosing between waxing and laser hair removal. One of the major disadvantages of waxing is that it can get messy, and that it has to be repeated every two weeks or so. Also, hair needs to reach a certain length before it can be waxed. With laser hair removal, a patient can feel free to shave in between sessions without interfering with the hair removal process.
