Together with other parts of the computers, computer scanners have become an essentially important part of work. A computer scanner is a device which gets any printed material directly transferred to the computer. It is used to convert any printed or hand written document, an image or even an object into a digital image. 

History

When we talk about numerous gadgets available on the market, computer scanners do not have an ancient history. They are said to have evolved from the telephotography devices which primarily were made of a rotating drum which was used to print the images. The first image scanner was developed in 1957 at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. From then on many developments were made regarding computer scanners. With a slow and gradual process, finally in the mid 1990s, colored computer scanners started becoming common in the work field. After going through a lot of technological processes until date, multiple types of image scanners have been invented.

Several types of computers scanners are readily available on the market. A buyer has a wide range to choose from flatbed scanners, sheet-fed scanners, handheld scanners, film scanners and drum scanners. Flatbed scanners are most versatile and widely used at work places and at home. All computer scanners consist of a charged-couple device (CCD), mirrors, scan head, glass plates, lamp, lens, filters, stepper motor, interface port and control circuitry. The core component of a computer scanner is the CCD array. Scanners which have a resolution of 1200dpi (dots per image) are suitable for most of the work but for enlargement purposes the resolution needs to be 2400dpi. However, higher resolution does not necessarily mean higher quality. To get best results for speedy scan USB 2.0 should be used. Also, some scanners come with image editing software, optical character recognition (OCR) and one touch scanning features as well.
