How To Extend the Power on Your Laptop

Introduction

Laptops are a part of everyday life for many people. They take them to work, carry them around with them everywhere, and are always using them while eating lunch or on the train. But the power in a laptop is not endless. The power supply of a laptop can be drained quickly, leaving you constantly looking for an outlet to recharge in. If you find your laptop power draining too quickly, there are a few tricks that will keep your battery from draining too quickly.

Step 1

Keep the screen dim

The majority of laptops have the ability to make your screen brighter or dimmer, depending upon your preference. To save the power when using your laptop, keep your screen as dim as you can stand it. At first, you may feel it is too dim, but if you let your eyes adjust to it a few moments, you will find you do not need it at its brightest setting to see what you are doing.

Step 2

Keep background programs to a minimum

Every laptop has a ton of background programs running that many are not aware of, draining their power. Go through your lists of running tasks to see what is using the power on your laptop and close the programs that you do not need running, like desktop search and other things that are draining the power from your laptop, while not doing anything useful for you.

However, never turn off your anti-virus protection. Even if you are not connected to the internet at the time, you want to always keep that running. That way you do not forget to turn it back on when you do have an internet connection.

Step 3

Choose hibernate or sleep, not standby

Standby mode will save some power to your laptop when you are not using it, but hibernate or sleep mode saves much more. Many choose standby because it is convenient and it instantly resumes where you stopped earlier. Sleep or hibernate mode will actually do the same thing; the only difference is that it completely shuts the laptop down, saving power. It may take a few seconds to restart afterwards, but all of your work is just as you left it so you can resume just as easily.

Step 4

Keep multitasking to a minimum

Keep your multitasking to a minimum, or do not do it at all. The fastest way to drain the power from your laptop is to work on several things at once. When you have several programs going at once and listening to music at the same time, you end up draining your battery quickly. Work in one program at a time and shut it down completely before opening up another.

Step 5

Take care of your battery

Many people fall into the habit of charging the battery and then leaving it in the laptop even when using the power cord. They do not exercise the battery enough and over time it will loses its power if it isn’t being used. A charged battery needs to be used at least once every two weeks to keep functioning properly. And, never let a battery completely discharge, this can also cause power issues in the future.
