Holland became independent from the Spanish empire in the 16th century after what is called the Eighty Years’ War. One of the main reasons for the revolt against the Spanish hegemony was due to religious differences between the Dutch and the Spanish. During the 16th century the Spanish empire become increasingly hostile to any religious practice that was perceived to be against Catholicism. This campaingn is against other religions is known as the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition led to persecution of many Dutch people as they were not Catholic but from the protestant strand of Christianity. Other reasons were the increased taxes levied by Spain on the Dutch people. Due to this experience of religious intolerance at the hands of the Spanish Inquisitors the leaders of the newly independent Dutch Repulic pushed for a high degree of religious tolerance. This emphasis on tolerance can stil be seen to be part of the culture of modern Holland.
