Introduction

Taking a cruise is something that many people only dream of. If you are fortunate enough to be able to book a cruise vacation, there are several things you will need to know before leaving on your cruise. For people that are new to the cruise experience, it’s the perfect time to gain the knowledge you need before boarding that ship!

Step 1

Cruise travel is something that many people only dream of but may never get to experience so if you are thinking about booking a cruise and you aren't sure what all is included, here is one of the many things you will need to know:

Cruise pricing includes your room, food and some beverages. The free beverages are most likely going to be tea, coffee, juice and possibly lemonade. This does not include alcoholic beverages or sodas in most cases, but you can opt to purchase drink packages with some cruise lines. The best way to find out is to call the cruise line directly or visit their website.

Step 2

Gratuities are something you will need to consider when taking a cruise. Some cruise lines may offer an option for pre-paid gratuities that you may pay at the time you book your cruise. Recommended gratuity amounts may differ by cruise line so once again, it is always best to check with the cruise line you choose and ask them about their gratuity policies.

Step 3

Make sure you pack clothing that is appropriate for the climate that you will be experiencing when you travel. For colder climates you will naturally want to make sure you pack plenty of warm clothing. For warmer climates of course you will need summer like clothing. It is always best to make sure you pack enough clothing to last for your entire cruise unless you want to pay a hefty price for laundry services onboard or take up your time while visiting a port by having to look for a coin laundry.

Step 4

If you choose to purchase something while visiting a port outside the United States, you must be prepared for the possibility that you may have to pay a duty fee. Some items such as gifts or those for personal use may be exempt from those fees.

Step 5

Before going on any cruise, make sure you check the United States Department website at: www.state.gov for passport information and travel related information. You want to make sure you have any and all documentation required for travel. Not having the proper documents can keep you from being allowed to board the ship.

You should be able to find all of the information you need on the State Government website but if you have additional questions, you can always call your travel agent or the cruise line you have chosen to travel with.

Tips

During cruise travel, it is possible that your baggage may be inspected.

Cruise travel is kind of like air travel in that you will be subjected to baggage limits.  Make sure you inquire with the cruise line before packing.

If there are any health issues amongst you or any of the passengers you are traveling with, you must make the cruise line aware of these health issues before traveling.
