History
Named after the first flying ace of the US Navy, Edward O'Hare, who was the recipient of the Medal of Honor while serving in World War II. The airport was built during WW II for construction of the Douglas C-54s due to its closed proximity to a railroad and to access the large work force of one of the largest cities in the United States at time.
After the war non-military flights did not start until 1955 and by 1956 O’Hare was serving over 10 airlines including Eastern, Delta, Pan Am and TWA. After deregulation in the 80s, St. Louis became a main hub for TWA and other airlines also moved for more competitive rates. Deregulation created competition between the airlines with the benefits to the passengers. Passengers were able to save due to lower fares and the industry itself grew by 32% while travel grew by 55% with the cost of travel dropping 17%. During the 2nd decade the prices for travelers drop 20% and the amount of people traveling went up from 275 million to 600 million.
