Introduction
Going to the airport for the first time can be a frightening and nerve-racking experience. You don't always know exactly what you have to do, and going through the process of airport security can be a bit intimidating. As you get ready for your first flight, these simple tips will help you prepare and help you know what to expect as you go through the line of airport security.
Step 1
Since the procedure of airport security can change from location to location, knowing what the guidelines are for each airport you visit is crucial. Research information on both the airport you are flying from and the airline you are flying with and check their security information, which can easily be found online. For example, many airports only allow a small amount of liquid to be taken on the plane, whether you are carrying shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, or other liquids with you. Usually these bottles of liquid must be in a quart sized plastic bag. If you fail to abide by these rules, your items may simply be confiscated in the security line. However, the rules of airport security differ from place to place, so you will have to check what type and size of items you are allowed to bring.
Step 2
It is crucial that you come prepared, both to speed up the process and to alleviate some stress. You should already have important documents in your hand before you get to the front of the line. Most airports will want to see your ticket and valid photo I.D. before you can pass through security, so you should come prepared as to allow for a quick process. Once again, all airports differ, so you should check before you arrive; however, there are usually signs in the line of airport secuirty that tell you what you will need before you can go through the metal detectors and scanners.
Step 3
Once you are past the initial location where they check your ticket and I.D., you will have to go through metal detectors and put all your items in bins to be sent through a scanner. You should be prepared for this and know that all of your items are subject to search. Don't bring any prohibited items into the airport or you may not get them back, and avoid wearing any metal jewelry. If you bring any gifts along, you should leave them unwrapped, as the employees of airport security may want to inspect them. Additionally, if you are bringing along camera film, do not send it through the scanners, as that may damage undeveloped film.
Additional Tip
As you go through the line of airport security, you will have to take your shoes off. Once you are done, move out of everyone's way instead of trying to put your shoes back on at the end of the line. There are usually chairs nearby, whether they are provided for this reason or there is a gate near security. Try to find a location where you can quickly get out of everyone's way instead of trying to situate yourself before leaving the area.
