Introduction

When the airport first opened, only locally run airlines such as Derby Airways could fly from it. The runway was small, and as such it could not accommodate more than a few flights a day. In the 1970s the airport was extended, with extra runway since being added, as well as more terminal buildings. In 1992, the airport made it clear that they wanted to accommodate more flights, but they realised that they had to become privatised in order to do this. Eventually, East Midlands airport became the first U.K. airport to become privatised.
In addition to offering an executive lounge and free Wi-Fi, East Midlands Airport has a wide variety of features available to those who fly from there. Their duty free shops offer tax free perfume, alcohol, cigarettes, and many more items that would usually be taxed in the United Kingdom. The airports shops also include Accessorize, a fashionable accessories store, and Boots, a well-known beauty mart.
If you fancy a bite to eat while you are there, East Midlands Airport offers a wide variety of options. Those who enjoy organic food can try SohoCoffee, while families will enjoy Burger King and Greggs, a traditional British bakers. For those who want to grab a quick drink before they fly, the Runway Bar and The Bar are both great places to buy beer, wine, and cocktails.

Before you fly from East Midlands Airport, make sure you adhere to the U.K. check in rules. If you are flying from the airport to a European destination, it is recommended that you check in at least two hours before your flight is due to depart. If your flight is heading for a destination outside the European Union, check in at least three hours before your flight is due to depart.
