Introduction
Football is not just a sport, it’s a language. A language that has no boundaries and a language that can be spoken by anyone. But just like with every good thing in life, there is a catch. The catch is, in order to speak this language, you need to hone your football skills. Athletes, who play football, carry the ball and juggle it as if its second nature to them. The football skills that these players of international stature and free style athletes posses are achieved through great amounts of practice and work outs.
History
Football used to be a game played by regular men who earned below average salaries for playing it. But the world is ever changing and so is everything in it. With due time, players pushed their exercise and workout regimes in order to be able to perform better. These performances led to fame and success. Slowly, clubs started to get involved with different forms of fitness regimes for players. But even today, be it in a champions league final or local school boys match, the player that outshines everyone else is the one who puts in an extra effort. Good workout regimes can help develop football skills in due time.
Features
Football is all about endurance and stamina. If a player cannot last 90 minutes, he cannot play the game. The best way to start off a workout is warm up. Remember warm up is the key exercise. A couple of laps around the field should get you properly warmed up. But running alone is not helpful to the extent some might consider it to be. Stretches after a run ensure that the muscles are ready and wont sprain. Once you are done with doing basic stretches it’s time to start with your basic skills workout. Many people start taking long shots at the goal, which is somewhat useless at this point. Here is a work out regime for your football skills you can follow and feel the results in a couple of weeks.
- Put down 5-6 training cones in a straight line at equal distance. Now slalom across the cones with the football. Make sure the ball does not touch any of the cones. Once you reach the end, turn around and work your way back. Doing this exercise will help hone your maneuverability. Do this five times in five different sets and time yourself.
- The “keepie uppie” is amongst the most basic football workouts. The goal is to keep bouncing the ball on your feet without letting it touch the ground. Number of reps and sets for this exercise depends on how much you can do it. Try setting a number for yourself and achieving it. In case you achieve it, try breaking your own record.
- Gather a couple of friends and make a triangle. Now pass the ball around. The direction and the speed of the pass should be random. The touches allowed on the ball should be decided in advance. In-case someone takes more touches than allowed or fails to control the ball while receiving it, they should do 10 pushups just to keep things interesting.
- Running till the half way line and back with the ball should help with control and awareness. Time yourself over how long it takes you till halfway line and back. Repeat this exercise twice in 3 sets.
- A game of head tennis with a friend should allow you to realize you heading ability and help with accuracy in heading. Stand a couple of meters across from each other and head the ball towards each other. Once again, one who misses a header should do 10-15 crunches just to keep things interesting.
- Stand 30-35 yards out and try hitting the dead ball towards the goal. Only your aim is not to score but to hit the cross bar. Do this as much as you can. This exercise will help create more accurate shots.
Tips and comments
These exercises are beginner level exercises, but that does not mean they are useless. In order to learn how to run, you need to learn how to walk first. Just like that , in order to have football skills like your favorite player, you need to work out the basic exercises first. If you cannot control the ball and bring it down nicely, your accuracy in front of the goal loses its value. Working out with these drills and exercises will, hopefully, help you become the player you wish to become.
