Introduction
Football Arsenal style is hailed for the entertainment it brings to fans in England and the entire Europe. In fact, the only other team that is known to play such football of sleek, short and accurate passes is Barcelona FC. Other than the type of football that the team displays, Arsenal FC is a club known for many other records and an interesting history as well. Though successful, it is sometimes difficult to imagine that at one time in the year 1910 the club went bankrupt.
History
Arsenal FC was founded in the year 1886 in Woolwich, South-East London. Interestingly, it was the Royal Arsenal workers who started the club, and its original name was Dial Square. The club’s name later changed to “Royal Arsenal” shortly after the founding and again in 1891 when it was switched to “Woolwich Arsenal.” The club ventured into professional football in 1891, by then the Football League where they started at the second division in 1893 before being promoted to the first division in the year 1904. After the club’s bankruptcy woes, they later on moved from Woolwich to North London, and more particularly the Highbury Stadium. This move was also followed by change of name to what it is known today, Arsenal FC. Though the club changed the name, its roots are replicated in the nickname of Arsenal football, “The Gunners” which describes the founders of the club who were the cannon makers at Woolwich. Throughout the club’s history, Arsenal FC has stood out for a number facts including:
• The first match to be broadcast live on Television, which was a training session of Arsenal FC in the year 1937.
• It is the only team to have had a local Tube station named after a football club in the year 1932. The Tube in question was known as Gillespie Road.
• Arsenal was the first club to win the FA cup under the current English Premier league when they did so in 1992.
• The club has never been relegated from the top flight level of the English league football since 1919.
• The team won the 2003/2004 English Premier League without being beaten a single game. That season, they set the record of 49 unbeaten games in a row.
Current Club Status
Arsenal FC is currently managed by Arsene Wenger, a Frenchman who took over in 1996. He is the 19th person to manage the club since 1894. The stadium of the club is known as the Emirates Stadium which was completed in 2006 and the club moved to at the start of the 2006/2007 Premier League Season. The current sponsors of Football Arsenal are Fly Emirates, a UAE Airline Company. The team’s home colors are red and blue.
Tips and comments
Though a very successful manager at Arsenal, the current manager, Arsene Wenger, has not missed out on a number of criticisms. He is largely criticized for overdependence on young players and his reluctance to splash money on expensive players during transfer windows. However, this to many of proponents is also viewed as the ingredient to the club’s financial success and is what makes football Arsenal unique as it is.
