Introduction

Early Days of Grimsby Town Football Club

Grimsby Town Football Club (nicknamed Mariners) was formed in 1878 as Grimsby Pelham. The club is located at Blundell Park football ground since 1898 in the seaside town of Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire of England. The Grimsby Football Club was formed after a meeting held at the public house of Wellington Arms in Freeman Street. The meeting was attended by the members and players of the neighboring Worsley Cricket Club who wanted to form a football club so that they can enjoy the idle winter evenings when the cricket season is over. The Grimsby football club was initially started as Grimsby Pelham after the family name of a local land owner, Earl of Yarborough. The home football ground of the club was at Clee Park until 1889, on a ground purchased in 1880. Before moving finally to the present Blundell Park in 1899, Grimsby football club was relocated to Abbey Park in 1889 temporarily. The club became a limited company 1890.

History

Grimsby Football Town Club joined the professional Football Alliance in 1890. The Alliance was registered as Second Division Football League in 1892. Since 1899 the club was playing in the neighboring areas of Cleethorpes. We found many confusing descriptions from the journalists and the historians on their early shirt colors with descriptions like, cardinal red and blue or chocolate and blue, etc.

Grimsby Football Club became the champion of Second Division League in 1901. The next two seasons they were upgraded to first division league until 1903. After the season of 1909 – 1910 the Grimsby Football Club was failed to get re-elected and was replaced by another football club named Huddersfield Town. It was then the previous jersey (chocolate and blue!) was replaced by the club's signature kit black and white stripes.

Features

The Grimsby Football Club played a single season in Midland League in 1910- 1911 and became the league champion. The club was again pulled back to the Second Division league by a single vote replacing Lincoln City. However, in spite of the glorious come back they failed to perform consistently and finished last at the end of 1920 and were again voted out of the second division league for the second time. However, the lady luck smiled at them and they were invited to join the newly formed Third division league erstwhile known as First Division Southern League. The league was expanded one year later and The Grimsby Football Club was moved to the northern section of the league.

The Grimsby Town Football Club was the league champion and was promoted to Second Division league. By 1929 they were promoted back to Division One and remained there until 1939 (except two seasons 1932/33 & 1933/34). The Grimsby Football Club secured their highest ever league position, the 5th, in Division One in the season of 1934--35. They participated in the FA cup semi final 1936 and 1939, but were defeated by Arsenal (0—1) in 1936. In 1948, they were demoted from Second Division.

Presently, Grimsby Town Football Club has been relegated from football league in 2010 and participating in Conference National. They are among 5 other English teams to participate in all top five division leagues in England.
