Hagi is a well respected player all over the world and he has made millions of Romanians proud during all the international competitions that he played. The Romanian national team had a great run in the 1994 World Cup which was held in the USA. With Hagi on the field the Romanian football team managed to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament where they were defeated by Sweden after an overtime game that was decided by penalty kicks. That game was probably the most dramatic game in Romanian football history, a lot of people say that if Romania would have won that game they would probably reached the finals and play against Brazil.

Romanian football is always surrounded by scandals. The biggest Romanian football scandal happened during Ceausescu’s dictatorship. The whole Europe was outraged by the fact that Camataru a Romanian player won the Golden Boot award because he scored 18 goals in the last six matches of the season and so reaching the incredible number of 44 goals in just 33 matches. After this incident the rules have changed regarding the Golden boot award and players from small leagues received fewer points. Camataru’s award was withdrawn after a year. Everyone thought that Ceausecu rigged the matches so that Camataru would score 18 goals in just six games but the player never had any knowledge of this fact or he doesn’t want to admit any of this.
