How To Find a For Rent House For Your Vacation

Renting a home for your next vacation

When planning a vacation it is a good idea to consider a for rent house, rather than a hotel or motel. This is especially true if you plan to stay for an extended period of time. Staying a for rent house is often more comfortable for the family. You will have access to a kitchen area for cooking, this can save money over the cost of eating out for three meals per day. A for rent house is also more spacious. You and your family will have enough room to each have your own space, rather than being on top of each other for a week or more. While you may think that finding a hotel in an area is easier than finding a for rent house, this is not always the case. With a bit of planning beforehand, you can have your for rent house reading and waiting at your destination.

Step 1

  • Search ads from the area where you intend to vacation. You can often find local newspaper classified ads from a certain area online. You can also find an area's Craigslist online. Look through both the newspaper ads and Craigslist. Look for ads talking about a for rent house. Look for houses that are large enough for your group and ones that have the amenities that you are looking for. For example, close to the beach, overlooking the ocean, whatever is important to you. Jot down information about each for rent house you think would be a good fit.

Step 2

  • Phone or email the owners of each for rent house you are interested in. Ask questions about the house. Also ask for more pictures to be sent to you, request both indoor and outdoor photos, you will also want photos of any special features that caught your attention in the ad. Also get the person's name and telephone number if you do not already have it. For your own safety, you may want to visit the tax assessor website for the for rent house you are thinking about renting. Just type in the address to be sure that the person you are renting from, is the actual name of the homeowner.

Step 3

  • Narrow your list of for rent houses down to the home you like best. Once this is done, it is time to make the arrangements for renting the house. While the homeowner will have information that they want from you, you should also ask for information before you exchange any money. You of course can and should ask for references. You might also want to check with the area police department to be sure that the house does in fact exist and that there are no known problems of scams going on with the rental of the house. The police department will also be able to direct you to any departments within the city or town that can help. Take all steps necessary to protect yourself before turning over any money.

Step 4

  • Read over the contract. The owner of the house should have a contract drawn up. Be sure that anything that you have agreed on is in the contract. Without that you have no proof. A deposit or portion of the rent will most likely be required up front. The rest can generally be paid when you arrive and get the keys.

Step 5

  • Be sure whoever stays in the for rent house with you follows the rules and provides proper care of the property. It is important to remember that whoever signed the contract will be responsible for damages and any issues that arise.

Tips

If you vacation in the same area often, you may be able to get the same house again the next time you go. Keep in touch with the owner if that is possible.
