History

Desperate housewives premiered on ABC on 3 October, 2004. Mark Cherry and his mother came up with the concept while watching a news report on Andre Yates. Television networks were initially hesitant of giving his new idea the go-ahead signal. However, ultimately it was accepted by ABC and promoted as its primetime series. ABC had issues with the title of the show ad wanted to change it to Wisteria Lane or The Secret Lives of Desperate Housewives. However, this issue was resolved and the show kept its original title.

Desperate Housewives does a great job at portraying varying gender roles. All the women in the series are housewives but at the same time they maintain their own social life and ambitions. Bree is quite traditional, she likes to keep the house clean and loves cooking. Latter in the show she runs her own catering business. Gabrielle is an ex-model who loves shopping and spending her husband’s money. Lynette was a successful business woman but had to give up her dreams to raise her children. Susan is a school teacher and in first season she is shown as trying to handle the role of a single mother. These are the four main characters of Desperate Housewives. The series revolves around their love lives and the problems they face in their domestic life. They have been through problems such as divorce and having cheated on by their husbands. The show depicts how they deal with different situations like these. Desperate Housewives is a show that gives you both sides of the picture. Women are represented as not being all noble but their flaws are also highlighted. For example we see that both Gabrielle and Bree commit adultery. Gabrielle is initially portrayed as being selfish and shallow. Desperate Housewives also incorporates murder, mystery and suspense. It includes trails of finding murderers and robbers. It involves a lot of deceit and betrayal. Thus the show also has a dark side to it. Comedy, drama and suspense combine to make the Desperate Housewives a must watch that leaves the audience glued to the television screen.
