How To Make Your House Green

Introduction

Civilization has come a long way since the age of the caveman, but in order to stay on sustainable path humanity may have to get back to the paleo way of living. The type of home that many people live in, is one of the most advanced forms of shelter found in existence. Of course, houses quickly go out of style as they are replaced by a fancier more efficient design.

The green house movement provides a way to put a roof over the heads of people, but also doing so in a way that does not harm the environment. Nature is very robust, but the planet can only supply so much in the way of fresh clean drinking water and breathable air. Some of the houses in which people live protect them, but damage the world around them.

For example, it is unfathomable too even think of living in a building without electricity. It is a modern life necessity. Unfortunately, some of the sources of electricity generation are quickly being depleted, while simultaneously doing harm to the environment. Coal is a common source of producing electricity around the world. The burning of coal heats up water, which puts off steam that is turning turbines. These turns convert this motion into electricity, which is then delivered to houses over power lines. This burning of coal also pollutes the air. That's why the United States Environmental Protection Agency has worked hard to reduce coal-fired plants or at least make them efficient and green.

You can do your part to live green, protecting the environment around us. No, you don't have to live like a caveman, but it helps to be in touch with the nature environment around you.

Step 1

Invest in newer, green appliance for your house. Many appliance manufacturers are building machines that have the Energy Star standard, which denotes efficiency. You can find the information you need to make an informed, green buying decision on the Energy Guide label. It will tell you how much electricity and water you can save every year, in the way of dollars.

Step 2

Keep your air conditioning system in the house at a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit to save on electricity resources as way to be green. Instead, purchase fans to help circulate air in a room where people in the house spend most of their time.

Step 3

Make your house green by literally planting trees on the outside of the building to block out sunlight. When you block out the sun you have to rely less on electricity usage via the A/C or fan, which helps conserve energy resources. You can also buy a few plants for the inside of the home to clean and recycle the indoor air.

Step 4

Install water devices that help the house regulate the use of this natural resource. By conserving water you are being green minded. For example, you can install a toilet with a smaller tank or a low flow shower head.

Step 5

Get a home energy assessment to learn how to make your house green. Some local, state and federal government agencies are all to happy to help citizens conserve natural resources, because it is in everyone's best interest.

Tips

Make your house green, but don't make it uncomfortable.
