Introduction
A full house makeover can seem overwhelming and expensive. However, there are ways to make your full house makeover manageable and less expensive. You just have to learn how to break up the jobs into easy to handle parts and you also have to learn how to get great deals. Whether you need the full house makeover, or just a room, there are ways to save money and give your home the look you want.
Step 1
- Make a list. List everything that you want done for your full house makeover. Break the list up according to room. Prioritize the list as well, this way you can work on the most important items first and the rest as budget allows.
Step 2
- Determine which items you can do yourself for your full house makeover. Be realistic when you access your skills. You want to save money on your full house makeover, but you do not want to risk injury or damage to the house. It is best to leave certain items to the professionals. However, many homeowners can handle painting. A new coat of paint does a lot to give your home a new look. Other items that you may be able to do is rip up carpet and flooring, and lay new carpet and floor tiles. There are probably a lot of items on your full house makeover list that you can handle on your own or with a bit of help from friends of family. The more you do yourself, the more money you save. Labor is a big part of the price for a home makeover.
Step 3
- Think about ready to assemble cabinets. Most people list cabinets on a home makeover wish list. You can have new cabinets at a fraction of the cost if you assemble them yourself. These cabinets will arrive at your home in pieces, you simply follow the instructions for putting them together. All pieces are there and cut to fit perfectly, so the job is not difficult.
Step 4
- Shop closeouts and discontinued styles. For tile, flooring, counter tops and fixtures, you can save a lot of money off the regular price when you shop discontinued styles. You may find items that you love that are deeply discounted so the store can make room for new items coming in. In some areas there are home improvement and lumber yards dedicated to only closeout and discontinued merchandise. Even if your area does not have one of these stores, your local home improvement store will have clearance items. Discount stores and clearances are a wonderful shopping option when doing a full house makeover.
Step 5
- Shop on the Internet. You can often find unique and inexpensive items such as light fixtures, lamps and other home decor items. The Internet connects you will sellers and stores around the country and around the world, you may find items for much less than what you would find in your own neighborhood. A quick search for any of your full house makeover wish list items, might find just what you are looking for at a price that you can easily afford.
Tips
Not everything you buy has to be new. Buying used can be a big money saver and even though it is not new, it is new to your home.
Get creative, recycle items to give them a new use. For example, an old wrought iron table from your yard, can easily and inexpensively be turned into a unique piece of wall art.
