Caring for home rugs and carpets
Home rugs and carpets can make a home look warm and inviting. However, if home rugs and carpets become worn and stained, they no longer help us to show our homes in the best light. Worn home rugs and carpets actually detract from the attractiveness of our homes. Luckily, there are some easy tips that a homeowner can follow to keep home rugs and carpets looking their best for many years to come. These tips only take a short amount of time, yet provide long lasting results when it comes to home rugs and carpet.
Step 1
Clean any spills as soon as possible. The longer a spill is allowed to set on home rugs, the harder it becomes to remove. While a liquid spill is wet, blot up as much of the spill as possible. Do not rub, this is important, rubbing just pushed the stain further down into the fibers of your home rug or carpet. Once you can not blot up anymore liquid, spray the soiled area with a rug and carpet stain remover. Allow the spray to penetrate deep down, then continue blotting. Leave a white cloth or paper towel over the stain with something heavy placed on top of it overnight. This will allow the stain to continue to be absorbed into the cloth or towel.
Step 2
Vacuum at least once or twice per week. Vacuuming is an important step in keeping home rugs and carpets looking good. By vacuuming you not only get the loose dirt and debris from the surface but also the dirt that has been ground into your home rugs or carpets. When vacuuming be sure to move the vacuum over the surface slowly. You also want to be sure to vacuum in one direction. The slower you go, the more dirt you will pick up. Many people vacuum much too fast. This should be done at a minimum of once per week, twice is even better.
Step 3
Shampoo your home rugs and carpets at least once per year. This gives them a deep down cleaning that is necessary. While your home rugs and carpets may look clean, they could and often do have dirt deep down in the fibers that shampooing will lift and remove. You can have this done professionally, or you can do this at home yourself if you have the right equipment. You are also able to rent the equipment in most areas of the country.
Tips
Place mats at both the front and back doors of your home. Make it a habit to always wipe your feet on these mats before entering the house. This limits the dirt carried into the house.
An even better idea is to make it a rule that shoes come off at the door. This keeps dirt, debris and mud from being brought into the house from outside.
Those with pets may find they need to shampoo and vacuum home rugs and carpets more often. Pets often shed and cover rugs and carpets with fur, this makes vacuuming more necessary.
