You can have a beautifully decorated home on a budget. It does not take a fortune to make your home look like you spent a lot of money. You may be surprised to find how many truly unique and gorgeous homes are decorated with recycled items, and even items taken from the trash. Having an eye for style is actually more important than having the  money to buy new items for your home. With some paint and with a change in your thinking habits, you may surprise yourself with some of the ideas you are able to come up with. Instead of looking at items as they now are, try seeing them as they could be. Challenge yourself to see everything in a new light. This makes decorating your home on a budget easier.

Step 1

Recycle. Before you throw anything away, take a good look at it. Ask yourself, what you could do to this item to make it look better? Ask yourself, is any space either inside or outside of your home where this item can be used? For example, an old wrought iron table top. If the legs break, most people would see the top as trash. However, this could also have uses such as a wall hanging inside your home, a piece of are outside in your yard, or even a unique tree swing hanging from a couple of chains in your yard. To go from a table to a wall hanging, you just need a few items, such as paint and sandpaper, you may also want to make it sparkle with some pretty stones. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Step 2

Check out catalogs and websites for high end stores. Find home decor acccesories that you like. Break them down into shapes, colors and added features. Find a similar style and shape at a discount store. Bring that item home and dress it up to make it look more like the high end item you saw in the catalog. An example is a vase that may have a certain shape and style you like. By an inexpensive vase in that shape and use your craft skills to dress it up to closely resemble the one in the catalog or on the website. You can cover a vase in rope, decoupage or even ripped sheets of brown paper bag for a leathered look. Break out the craft magazines or search online for great tips on faux finishes.

Step 3

Re-purpose items that you already have. You can use a beautiful canister set in the bathroom or bedroom for storage. Move a piece of furniture from one room to another. Add a simple fresh coat of paint to give it a new look. Paint can do a lot to update the look of your decorating. Even kitchen cabinets that may be old and outdated can look new and fresh with paint and new hardware. New hardware is not expensive, yet it can make a big difference in the look of the room. This is true for hardware on old dressers as well.

Tips

Do not be afraid to experiment. Remind yourself that you cannot make a mistake. Whatever you create or try is fine. If you do not like it, start over. You can repaint, you can begin a project again if it does not turn out the way you want.
