Introduction
A wireless home is just as important as having electricity. Nearly every device that we use in the home has the potential to go wireless, maybe with some type of upgrade. Most people are familiar with making a desktop or laptop computer system wireless. The technology is fairly standard by companies that manufacture computers, to include an integrated wireless adapter on the inside of the system or make sure there expansion slots, such as universal service bus or PCI, are available to add on a wireless adapter when the owner is ready. Make sure you follow a few simple steps to make your home network wireless.
Step 1
Buy a new wireless router to replace your existing wired home networking system. Although most modern routers have both wired and wireless networking capabilities, some people may still own a basic wired router or switch. You can find these appliances at local or online electronics retailers. You shouldn't have to worry too much about the technical specifications of the new wireless router because manufacturers commonly include older and newer standards. However, you should double-check to make sure any existing wireless adapters are fully compatible with the new wireless router.
Step 2
Make sure the wireless router system has enough range and signal strength to reach important parts of the home. You may have to ask everyone who owns a computer in your home where there will be using the Internet most often. Then you should make an educated guess whether or not they may have trouble accessing the wireless home system.
For example, is someone's room is in the basement, they may have difficulty gaining a steady signal from the router. If your home has thick walls, such as brick, then the signal may not adequately reach other parts of the home.
Step 3
Obtain new wireless adapters that will work with the home system. For example, if you own a desktop, by an external USB adapter that can make your computer system connect to the wireless home networking system.
Step 4
Unpackage and connect all the wireless home networking equipment according to manufacturer specifications. You may have to install hardware device drivers to get the computer to recognize the hardware, but this is usually included in the packaging.
Step 5
Use the native wireless home networking utilities in the Windows operating system to help you complete the set up of the network.
Tips
Be sure to set up the wireless security protocols for your home network system.
