No matter what kind of home fish species you like, they all have some things in common. You will first need a large tank, in order for them to have enough moving space. After that, they will need an air filtering machine, because home fish will need their water with oxygen in it. Regarding the food, home fish will need dry food, and also live food such as small worms. If you have a house, then a tank with home fish could be a great decorative piece that could have various types of lights. But remember, the lights must not be too strong because it can make them very dizzy.

If you have an apartment and it is not too spacious, but you absolutely want some home fish, you must remember this: never keep the tank in the same room with small children, because of the water they could develop lung problems. So it is not recommended that you keep home fish and children in the same living space.

Another problem that you might encounter when you have home fish is with their reproducing. They usually tend to eat their little ones so when they are about to get birth, you should move them into another tank. After the female has given birth, you should move her back into the original tank, and let the small fish alone for a couple of weeks. So it comes again, the available space problem.
Tips
When one of your home fish gets sick, you should immediately move it from the tank into a different one. This has to be done because otherwise, the fish will infest the others and most likely they will die in a few days. You will need to know what kind of diseases home fish could suffer, in order for you to treat them yourself, or if you know nothing about treating fish, you should get it to a pet doctor, he or she will most likely identify the disease from which the fish is suffering and will be able to tell you if it's going to get better or not.
