Introduction

Choosing a retirement home can be a difficult process if you do not know what to look for. The best retirement homes will depend on the abilities of the person who will be living in the home. Generally retirement homes are chosen for those who can take care of themselves and live alone. However, these people may need someone to check in on them. Often people will move to retirement homes as they age and caring for their big house becomes too much of an ordeal. Retirement homes do not require the residents to handle upkeep of the grounds. Another benefit is knowing that there is always someone there if help is needed.

Step 1

Tour any retirement homes before making a decision for yourself or loved ones. Be sure that the home is clean and that it is well kept. Retirement homes should be pleasant and cheerful, not dark and depressing.  You will want to choose a home with a pleasant environment. One that is homey and that you or your loved one can feel good about living in.

Step 2

Check for safety issues. While you are visiting retirement homes look for safety issues. Be sure that flooring is secure to avoid falls. Look for fire alarms, sprinklers and extinguishers. Ask about generators and how emergencies are handled. Also inquire as to which hospital residents are transferred to should they need to be seen.

Step 3

When visiting retirement homes take note of the residents and staff. Do the residents seem happy? Is the staff kind? Watch how the staff and residents interact with each other. The staff is very important when it comes to these facilities, They can make living there a pleasant experience or a miserable one. The staff should be evaluated well.

Step 4

Speak to the families of residents. If while visiting retirement homes you have the chance to speak to families members that are visiting relatives, take advantage of it. Speak to the families and ask what they like about that particular facility and also what they do not like about a particular facility.

Step 5

An important aspect of retirement homes are activities. Meet with the activity director to discuss activities and outings that residents can take part in. You may even choose to get involved and help out with activities. If you can play an instrument, bring pets to visit, sing or teach craft, they may be happy to have you come in and entertain residents from time to time.
