Tips And Ideas For Closet Home

Introduction

No matter how large our home closet it, it still seems to small to hold all of our items. The problem is often not the size of the home closet, but how we organize our items. Home closet organization is such an issue for people that there are experts who are hired to come into the house and organize the home closet for you. For those whose budget does not allow hiring a home closet organizer to come to their house, there are some tips and ideas that you can use to turn your home closet into a neat and organized area, rather than a overstuffed mess.

Step 1

Go through every item in your home closet to see if you wear it, like it and if it fits. Much of the mess in a home closet comes from holding on to items that we no longer need. If you bought something and then decided you did not like it, for whatever reason, maybe it did not fit right or the color was wrong, get rid of it. Do not feel guilty, give it away to someone who might want to wear it. If you do not know anyone, thinking about donating to a homeless shelter, battered woman's shelter or Good Will.  If an item does not fit, even if you love it, you should get it out of your home closet to make room for the things that you do wear. Experts say that if an item has not been worn in a year, it should go.

Step 2

Measure your closet. Jot down these measurements and a sketch of your home closet. You will use this when you go to shop for bins, boxes and other organizational items. While you are shopping pick up clear shoe boxes for all shoes in your closet. This will enable you to stack shoes in boxes on top of each other, and still be able to see what is inside. Buy the boxes that have a pull out drawer so you can take out a pair of shoes without having to dismantle the entire stack of boxes. Also buy more hangers, padded ones for delicate items, plastic hangers for most other items and wooden hangers for heavier jackets.

Step 3

Install some shelving in your home closet. Shelves can be used for items such as sweaters, sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts and other items that do not need to be hung on a hanger. Fold items that can be placed on shelves. You may want to short these items by color or by item type. Such as sweaters in one pile, t-shirts in another, etc.

Step 4

Hang items on the appropriate hanger. Place items on your bed or another flat surface while you determine the best way to sort your clothing. You may want to hang clothing by outfits, or by color, or by type. If you have certain items that you wear together, you can place them next to each other in the closet. You can also hang clothing by color, or by type, such as jeans together, dresses with dresses and blouses with blouses. Whichever way you feel will be easiest and most convenient for you is best. Hang clothing in the closet in whichever manner you feel will be best.

Step 5

Hang belts, ties and scarves on their special hangers in the home closet.

Tips

Anything that was in the closet that you have not placed back in can either be removed to another location, given away or thrown away. If you find it is something that you do need to keep in your home closet, place it neatly on one of the shelves you have installed.

Keep your closet neat and organized by putting clothing away correctly after it has been cleaned. It is easy to let things go and have your home closet turn into a jumbled mess again if you do not work on keeping the habit of being organized.
