Introduction
Your home may be the perfect one for you, with the right number of rooms of just the right sizes and the perfect kitchen. Or, as it often happens, it may have fallen short of your expectations. But does that mean that you cannot turn your home into your own Eden? Of course not! With a little effort, and a bit of creativity, you can turn your humble abode in to the perfect home for yourself. Especially your kitchen, the place where you spend a great deal of your time when at home, can also be transformed with just a few decorations.
Step 1
The first thing to do is to answer the question: What do you want? Trust us when we say that might not be the easiest question to answer. To determine how you want to decorate your kitchen and home, you first need to consider a few things. What do you want the new look to reflect? Is there a particular feeling you want to get when you step into your home and when you go to your kitchen? Do you want them to reflect your personality in any way? If so, what are your interests and passions? Do not rush yourself. Take the time to plan things out. Jot things down as they come to you. Then when you have a reasonable idea, it is time to move on.
Step 2
Next step: Browsing. This will involve window shopping, or if you cannot bear the thought of roaming around a shopping plaza all day- surfing the net. We would recommend using Google to find the items you have in mind, or just checking out a few home décor blogs. Some sites offer interactive tools that let you play around with colors and tiles. Look at some color swatches for curtains or if you’re thinking about painting the walls. How do the colors and themes make you feel? We’d recommend going to stores for this. A kitchen set might look amazing online but it’s completely different once you finally set it up. As far as painting your walls goes, it is a wonderful idea, but be careful with how you go about it. Black and silver with legends sprayed across the walls sounds radical, but you might get tired of the overall look.
Step 3
There’s another reason why we’d recommend visiting a store for inspiration, and that is the floor tiles. Be it your kitchen or any other part of your home, floor tiles, when chosen right, can look amazing. Did we mention how it is also easier to clean the daily kitchen (and other) messes off of floor tiles than any other surface? Also, you can find amazing cabinets and cupboards in these stores that would look amazing all over the house. The right kind of cabinet can do wonders in your kitchen as well. Also, the store owners can give you a better idea of how to go about decorating, especially if you’re planning on doing it yourself. Browsing in different stores can give you more options and ideas, not to mention you might find something more affordable.
Step 4
But once the paint and tiles and heavier items have been settled, we would recommend checking out another great source of material and inspiration-- the flea market. You can find anything there: antique cabinets, old china, figurines, beaded curtains and even furniture! The best part is its all dirt cheap. So you can get what you want without maxing out your credit card, and the experience is fun to boot! Visiting a flea market, or even a local garage sale, can help especially if you’ve been harboring this desire to let your inner “do it yourself” out. Trust us, your home and specifically your kitchen will look the better for it.
Step 5
So once the knicks and knacks have been bought, it’s time to start decorating. Here, we cannot stress enough the importance of getting some professional help. It wouldn’t do at all to spend all that time, effort (and money!) finding the perfect tiles and paintings for your home and kitchen only to break your thumb or cause a pipe to burst on the first day of redecorating- it happens. Even if you’re not doing some heavy scale remodeling, and do notwant to call the carpenter just to get a few nails up, at least get someone to help you get the work done. This is exactly why we recommended talking to the store owners. Also, decorating is no fun when you’re doing it alone. In this case the old saying “the more the merrier” holds true . Also, while dealing specifically with the kitchen, it might be a good idea to buy new utensils- the overall effect is both refreshing and pleasing to the eye, not to mention practical. Try spice racks, they modernize the kitchen very much. Wall paper looks amazing too.
Tips
Remember that there are always some inexpensive ways to decorate your kitchen and home- a new basket on the corner table, an unusual or brightly colored object (an industrial chair etc.) in a plain room etc. The right lighting and shades can add to the effect without getting too costly. Also, you could opt to not paint the entire room, just one wall. There’s no limit to what you could achieve. Always remember that when you’re asking for someone’s ideas and advice, you need to keep your own ideas and happiness in perspective as well. Incorporate some good ideas by all means, but this is your home, so your happiness and comfort with the overall effect is more important. Good Luck!
