Great Advice For Internet Home

Published at 03/09/2012 01:54:48

Introduction

There was a time when most homes did not have to worry about an Internet home network but these days that is not the case. More and more homes now have several items that use the Internet home network. These items include PCs, laptops  and video games, all needing to get a strong signal so they can be used anywhere in the home. Luckily, there is some great advice for Internet home networks that can help give everyone in the home a strong signal.

Step 1

Move the router. If your Internet home networks signal seems low, you may have to move the router. If you have the router near an outside wall for example, it should be moved. Moving it to a more central location within the home will help. When it is placed near an outside wall, half the signal is being sent outside where it is not doing anyone any good.

Step 2

The home office is a popular place for your main computer and Internet home network to be set up. This can also be one of the worse places to set up if you have metal filing cabinets. Filing cabinets are useful in the home office, but they are bad for your home Internet set up because the metal actually blocks your signal. If you cannot move your home Internet setup, then you may want to look into moving the filing cabinet. Perhaps it can be placed in a closet, out of the way.

Step 3

Change the antenna. If you have no choice, but to keep your router near an outside wall, you may have to change the antenna. A normal antenna that comes with your home Internet equipment sends the signal out in all directions. However, there are antenna available that will only send it into the direction it should go. It will stop sending anything outside.

Step 4

Change your routers channel. When the company that installed your home Internet equipment set it up for you, they most likely left the router set to the default channel that it was shipped with. Your neighbors may also have theirs set to the same channel. You are competing with everyone who keeps the router on the default channel. Try changing yours to see if your speed increases. There are eleven channels to choose from so your chances are good that you will pick a better one.

Step 5

Always keep your Internet home network secure. You will want to use a password and not give that out to others. If you think someone may have your password, you should change it as soon as possible. Thnk of it as a key to your home, you would not pass that around to just anyone, you should not let just anyone have your password either. Security is very important, you should also also have the firewall on your router activated.

Tips

  • If one tip does not help with your speed or signal, try another. Keep trying until you have solved the issue.
  • The more centrally located your router is, the better chance that all items will work better.
  • If you continue to experience problems, calling your local home Internet provider may be necessary.
