Keeping Tropical Fish Home Aquariums

Keeping tropical fish aquariums is a fun hobby and a learning process at the same time. Even after you think you have it all down there will still be surprises down the road with fish home aquariums. What makes fish keeping so different from most other hobbies is that you are dealing with living, breathing fish that respond to everything around them just as humans. Good or bad, fish respond to the food you feed them, temperatures, diseases and their tank mates. Each tank is a small, unique living community that must be tended to and cared for in order to survive and thrive.

Step 1

Water changes are a necessity of keeping fish home aquariums. Every minute of the day fish waste builds up, plants decompose and rot and sometimes fish die in the water. These pollutants in a confined fish tank create intolerable living conditions for keeping healthy fish. Set a schedule for water changes and change a minimum of about 25 percent of the water each week. Each tank has different conditions that must be considered for water changes. For example, the more fish in a tank, the more frequently tanks need to be changed.

Step 2

Buy fish that are compatible together in fish home aquariums. In other words, the tank must be a place where all the fish can get along reasonably well. If you have bullies or species that chase other fish around the tank constantly, you will develop problems. Fish that are chased and have no hiding spots for relief become ill or open to diseases just like people. To resolve this situation, you can rearrange fish tanks to create hiding places in plants, caves, behind large rocks or behind logs. Or consider selling the bully in fish home aquariums to a pet shop or trading fish with a friend to get the fish out of the tank. Keeping fish of similar sizes helps to prevent harassment, but in some cases certain species are aggressive and should not be placed in communities of fish home aquariums.

Step 3

Beginners should start with easier fish to raise and not go overboard by spending tons of money on new fish until they gain experience. Fish at the tropical fish stores do not seem too expensive, but wait until your sale is rung up at the register with all your fish, plants, fish food and medicines and you might get a surprise. Start out with a small quantity of fish in fish home aquariums and just see how it goes. In the first month, you will gain valuable experience as you learn how to feed, lighting requirements, how to change the water and probably a lesson or two in treating diseases.

Tips

Educate yourself about keeping tropical fish in fish home aquariums. The Internet has substantial amounts of information for beginners and those seeking advice about new tank developments and problems. At the very least, research each fish species that you are keeping. Get to know food preferences, water temperatures, mating habits and whether they prefer the bottom, middle or top of the tank for swimming and feeding. Consider purchasing a quarantine tank for new fish to watch them for diseases before placing them in the main tank.
