Introduction
Home pet care is important, as the more home pet care that you give to your pets, the easier they are to have around. Home pet care includes training, grooming and cleaning up after the furry family members. Some pets will require more home pet care than others. For example pets that spend most of their time in cages, will generally require less training than others such as dogs. Even animals that are not caged will have differing home pet care needs, for example a dog will often require more training and grooming than a cat.
Step 1
Clean up is important. This is one of the most important aspects of home pet care. Cleaning up helps keeps our pets comfortable and healthy and our surroundings as well. Be sure that litter box cleanup is on the to-do list if you have cats. Cage cleaning should be done on a regular basis for caged animals. Scooping the yard is a must for those with dogs. Dog poop is not only unsanitary and unpleasant, but it attracts rodents to your yard.
Clean up is important for those who walk their dogs as well. Always take a bag to clean up after you pet when you are walking. Plastic grocery shopping bags work well for this.
Step 2
Learn to bathe and groom your pets. Taking pets to the groomer can get expensive. There are DVDS on the market that show step-by-step instructions for pet grooming. Pet clippers make dog grooming easy to do at home. With a few supplies you can handle most grooming needs for your pets yourself at home.
Step 3
Be consistent with rules. Many homes have problems with this part of home pet care. The reason for this is often due to not all family members being on the same page. For example if one family member allows pets on the furniture and another does not, it is confusing for the pet. Families should get together to discuss rules and agree to follow an agreed upon list of rules for pets.
Step 4
Nutrition is another aspect of home pet care that should be given thought. Not all pet food is created equally. For the health and well being of your pet, it is important to read the ingredients list on all pet foods. You will want to be sure that your pet is getting what is important for them. For example a dog will need protein, check the bag of dog food before you buy it to see where on the ingredient list the protein source is. You always want to know the type of protein used. The word meat is not enough, look for food that specifies, beef, chicken, lamb or turkey.
Step 5
Make time for play. This is something that should not be overlooked in home pet care. The amount and type of play needed will depend on the pet you have. Dogs, cats and rabbits are just a few of the pets that need toys and stimulation. Getting your pets toys helps them work their brain and keeps them from getting bored. It is also a good time for bonding.
Step 6
Be sure your pet is up to date on shots and veterinarian visits. Your pets health is important and one way to provide excellent home pet care is to see to it that appointments are kept.
Step 7
Remember the importance of exercise. Again different pets will require differing amounts of exercise. For some pets, such as dogs, the exercise requirement is large. Dogs should be walked each day. A dog should have at least an hour of walking time per day. They also benefit from back yard play time.
Step 8
Just as humans are uncomfortable in certain weather conditions, so are pets. Taking a pets comfort into consideration is another must do step when you want to provide the best home pet care. If the weather is too cold for you, it is most likely not a day for your pets to be kept outdoors. Likewise if you are hot, your pet is probably even hotter.
Step 9
Understand that getting a pet is a big responsibility and one that you will have for a long time. Many people start off with good intentions when they buy a puppy, kitten, bunny at Easter, hamster, gerbil or even a snake. Then reality sets in and these pets get bigger, get harder to handle or are messier than they had thought. A pet becoming more difficult is not a reason to give up and turn that pet into a shelter. You made a commitment when you brought that pet into your family. If you absolutely cannot keep the pet, you should at the very least find a good and loving home for it.
Step 10
Spay or neuter your pets. This is better for you and better for them. With so many unwanted pets looking for homes, it is sad to bring more into the world. You may be unable to find homes for these animals and they too could end up in shelters or on the streets where they will breed and just continue to make a difficult situation worse.
Tips
When training pets, make sure that you never hit them. Stay calm and be consistent in letting them know what you want and expect.
