Great Advice For Home Baskets

No matter how large a house or closet space there is never enough storage without those handy home baskets. Not only is it extra storage space but home baskets organize and give structure to any cluttered space. Here are some easy steps that will have your home baskets ready in no time.

Step 1

Gather around the materials that you’ll need for creating your home baskets. A sewing machine, fabrics for the outside (A) of the box and inner lining of the box (B) , Thread for all purpose in varying matching colors ,scissors, cardboard or any other stiff material to form the stiff architecture of the basket , chalk and see through ruler for measurement.

Step 2

Cut the fabrics according to the size of your home baskets. Use a transparent ruler and a colored chalk to make accurate measurements. From fabric (A) cut 7 ¼ “x 9 ½ “piece and 7 ¼ x 33 “piece. This will structure the bottom part and the outer walls. From fabric (B) also cut two pieces exactly according to the measurements given above. This will form the inner lining of the wall and bottom floor of your home baskets.

Step 3

To make the most of your home baskets they should be suitable for storing all kinds of materials and so the walls should be stiff and maintain form. To achieve this use cardboard or chipboard to insert between layers of fabric A and B. Cut out
4 pieces measuring 6" x 3¼"
2 pieces that measuring 6" x 8¾"
1 piece that measuring, 6½" x 8½

Step 4

Creating the wall for your home baskets. Fold the 6½" x 33" piece of the outer fabric A into half, with right sides together and then stitch up the 6½" side leaving ½ “ seam allowance. Repeat the same folding and sewing step for fabric B which I the inner lining. Position the sewn Fabric B part within the sewn Fabric A piece and match the seam lines. Stitch the first vertical seam at the joining part of the 6 ½ “meeting lines of fabric. Mark additional seam lines with your chalk at the following intervals: 9", 3½", 3½", 9", and 3½".

To create the bottom of the home baskets attach the 7½" x 9½" piece of Fabric A to the 'walls' you just made. This creates the box bottom.

Step 5

The nest step involves stiffening the walls of your home baskets by inserting the cardboard strips between the vertical seam lines. To make the bottom part place the 6½” x 8½” cardboard pieces on the underside of fabric B. Fold the edges of the fabric over the cardboard. Keep all the fabric tight while sewing over the seams.

Tips

To collapse your home baskets, the bottom cardboard slip may be removed and the walls easily slide over each other.
To make the instructions easier to follow you may use the same fabric for the lining as for the outside i.e. fabric A and B from the same material.
