Introduction
We live in a networked world, and it makes sense for households to have a network home environment. The average home may have anywhere from two to three bedrooms, with about three to five household members. in this modern digital age is perfectly conceivable that each member of the household has his or her own computer, all wanting a connection to the Internet.
Although most households have access to high-speed broadband Internet connections, service providers may only provide one modem that has a connection to the Internet. Subscribing to a second high-speed Internet connection is not economical for most households because that means an extra $50 a month for the service on top of other Internet and telephone bills.
Luckily, consumer electronics manufacturers provide wired and wireless routers to help households share a single high-speed connection with multiple computers. A router is suitable for most household need to set up a network, but there are a few additional tips that you can consider to make having a network environment worthwhile and easier for everyone to use.
Step 1
Always start from a wireless perspective when thinking about setting up a network home environment. Both desktop and laptop computers can connect to a wireless router. Most PC manufacturers include a built-in wireless adapter on the inside of laptop computers by default. Desktop owners can easily purchase an external wireless adapter and follow the instructions for installing this device on the computer tower.
The benefit of always using wireless is that you don't have to worry about running long cables throughout your home and creating a tripping or other type of safety hazard as people walk through your home.
Step 2
Install powerline adapters to create a network home environment. These are adapters that plug into the electrical outlet in each room where members of your household use a computer. Theoretically, your entire home then becomes a network. The router connects to one electrical outlet sending and receiving data to your home's internal wiring.
Step 3
Hire an electrician or a similar type of contractor who can add ethernet cabling throughout the structure to create a network home environment. For many people, it is more cost effective to retrofit the entire home with new ethernet cables capable of supporting a home network. This is the case for professionals who have a small home office, but also want to share a high-speed connection with other rooms in the home such as a study for students or to stream movies and TV shows to the home entertainment center and theater areas of the home.
