Students who study law don’t have certain specialization that they could study in. It’s not like in medicine wherein students would decide what kind of doctor they want to be and go into further studies depending on their specialization. Law students study everything in general. What is a criminal defense lawyer?
A criminal defense lawyer is a lawyer who specializes in the defense of a person being accused with a criminal case. They don’t just appear in court and ask questions like you see in the movies, they also do a lot of research about their case. Lawyers don’t go to court empty handed so they also do their investigation. They study the situation and the case, they look for evidence, and they look for any loop holes that would be very crucial in helping their clients. A criminal defense lawyer is also the one who negotiate with the prosecutors with regards to the charges being sentenced to their clients such as reduced jail sentence or reduced bail charges and a lot more.
So are they the bad guys?
The answer to that question is no because it's really a job and nothing more. A criminal defense lawyer should not be labelled as the bad guy in the scenario just because he is always taking the side of the criminal. In the first place, lawyers chose their specialization probably based from their own experience or just because they also believe that every person has the right to be defended and not to be judged instantly.
Just try to imagine a person being charged for something that he did not do and he would not have a chance to have a criminal defense lawyer to work out his case. That innocent man would be put to jail and the real culprit is still at large. So as you can see, criminal defense lawyers are still considered workers for justice.
Why do some criminals need a criminal defense lawyer when they’re already caught in the act?
As mentioned before, criminal lawyers also work to manage the charges that are being sentenced to the criminals. The criminal defense lawyer usually asses the gravity of the case and try to work on some solution that would somehow help their clients to have their sentences to be reduced.
