Introduction

Benefits are an important part of the compensation that people get from jobs. From the employer's perspective, human resources professionals and accountants in the organization calculate benefits into the overall cost of labor for each employee. It is based on these calculations that potential new hires receive job offers.

It's important people in the labor force understand all of the benefits from jobs, offered by a particular employer or across an industry. The most popular and obvious benefits center around personal health and well-being. However, there are a few other benefits that employees might have never considered or never took too seriously. Nonetheless, if an employer offers benefits from jobs worked, employees should take the time to learn about them.

Step 1

Try to get medical and dental benefits from jobs. Taking care of your personal health is probably the singular most important thing you can do to ensure a lasting career and long life in general. However, healthcare costs are increasing across the board, and many employers are cutting back on these benefits. If you have a choice of jobs during your search for new employment, narrow you options by which employer offers health benefits.

Step 2

Retirement and savings benefits from jobs are also important as you get older. Although pension plans are going the way of the dinosaur, there are other options that you can get through your employer, including a 401-k. This takes some of the burden of planning for retirement off of you, because other plan administrators are responsible for making sure your monies are properly secured and invested.

Step 3

Disability benefits from jobs, are mandatory in some professions, while it is optional in others. For example, people who work in construction or manufacturing may be required to have disability coverage because of the high incidence of injury. People who work in less accident-prone professions, might also receive some type of disability coverage. For example, if an accountant or a teacher suffers a debilitating stroke on or off the job, disability may be there to cover expenses.
