About Civil Jobs

Introduction

Civil jobs are those in which employment is through the Local, State or Federal agencies. When someone is employed in a civil service position it means they work for one of those government agencies. Different types of civil service jobs are available.

Overview of Civil Jobs

Jobs through local, state or federal agencies can be civil service positions. These jobs are available in many different departments within the government agencies. Some examples of civil service jobs are:

State Highway Patrol Officer – They generally perform a variety of tasks including keeping the highways safe. Most state has their own Highway patrol agency that employs certified police officers. Sometimes these officers may also perform security assignments for important officials.

Division of Motor Vehicles – Each state has their own DMV with multiple locations throughout the state. The employees in the DMV will perform things such as issue drivers’ licenses; administer driving tests, process driver license renewals and motor vehicles checks.

United States Postal Service – Positions within the USPS such as customer service, mail carriers, and mail processing clerks are positions that are considered civil service positions.

Administrative Jobs – Any job within a government department that is considered an administrative position is also a civil service position. These positions may include but are not limited to general administrative positions, human resources management, and officers in administration.

Just about any of the positions in local, state or federal agencies will require the candidate take a civil service exam. These exams will differ based on the type of civil service job a person is applying for. Exams for the job vacancies will be conducted by different government departments.

Pro's and Con's of Civil Jobs

The salaries in civil service jobs will vary dependent on the job title. All of these jobs are considered public jobs and realistically the salary level is pretty competitive with other jobs. Amongst all of the government agencies, there are many different positions required in order to keep the departments up and running.

Having a civil service job is beneficial to the employee but there are also some downfalls to such positions. Sometimes as our government makes budget cutbacks and decreases the number of employees in specific departments. This can mean that you could either be laid off or be transferred to another department.

It is also not uncommon for people to have a negative view of civil service workers. Sometimes they are given a bad name because people seem to view them as unethical, lazy or too politically involved.

With both pro’s and con’s, the civil service jobs really are great positions to have for someone that is seeking longevity and a chance for moving up in their job. Promotions are often given from within specific departments and if you can land a civil service job, you will most likely retain that job for a long time.

With benefits being harder to come by on traditional private sector jobs, there number of individuals seeking civil service jobs is continually growing.
