Introduction

There are many different types of dining establishments that offer a variety of different foods. These food service providers depend on a variety of employees to keep everything running smoothly. Let’s take a look at some of the jobs in food service.

Hospitality Food Service Jobs

Most of the jobs in food service you will see are those in the category of hospitality. Jobs in food service will vary in different dining establishments. One very common job in food services is the job of a cook. A good cook plays a major role in being able to please customers in a restaurant. Food service cooks should know how to prepare a variety of food items and be able to do so in a clean, efficient and tasty manner.

A cook must know the procedures of the restaurant and know how to prepare items for specialty orders. You may have customers with a special request which means the cook will need to be able to prepare the food accordingly.

Food service jobs also include positions for servers and/or waitresses. This is also a very important title when it comes to food service jobs. If you are a waitress or server, you are most likely going to be the first person to receive any customer complaints or requests. You will also need to be accurate when taking orders from customers. Customers may sometimes have special requests and it will be up to you to relay those requests to the cook.

Waitresses and/or servers will also need to have a pleasant personality and be able to get along well with others.

Another job in food service is host/hostess. This is also an important position because this person is usually the very first person a customer will encounter. A host or hostess will generally be in a capacity similar to that of a greeter. They greet customers when they come into the restaurant and will generally find acceptable seating for the customers.  Some host/hostess jobs will also consist of you having to help clean tables off and collect payment.

Food services jobs such as a host or hostess need to be taken by individuals who are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the restaurant they are employed by.

There are food service jobs in other industries besides hospitality. Let’s take a look at a couple of the non-hospitality type food service jobs.

Food Service Jobs Besides Hospitality

Most of the healthcare facilities and schools with have a nutritionist that will be the person who manages the menu for the cafeterias. There are certain nutritional requirements when it comes to serving food in these facilities. A nutritionist or dietician will be the one who determines what is offered on the menu.

Daily nutritional requirements must be followed when preparing food for healthcare facilities and school cafeterias.

Last but not least, in addition to the dietitian or nutritionist, someone has to actually put food on the trays or service the buffet areas in these areas. Non-hospitality food service jobs as a server will be a little different than they are in hospitality. If you are a server in a hospital cafeteria or school, you will be the one that actually serves food to a person by putting the food on their plate or tray.

That concludes some of the types of food service jobs you may find in different areas. Food service jobs can be demanding in nature but if you are a people person and have the necessary skills and knowledge for one of these jobs, the positions aren’t hard to find and once you get your foot in the door, there is always a chance for advancement.
