Introduction
Its not always easy finding a job and once you do find a job, sometimes you have to take a second one because the first one does not pay enough or offer enough hours to make it worth while. There are many different jobs that are meant to be side jobs from your normal everyday job and typically these jobs offer flexibility, decent pay by the hour and they are usually night jobs which makes them easy to do alongside your day job. One popular side job among students, young people and people looking to supplement their regular income is catering. Catering jobs can be found anywhere and almost every town has at least one catering company. Weddings, graduations, corporate events, conferences and large parties are usually where you would be working. The local newspaper or online job bank may list these jobs but the best way to find out if they are hiring is to go there directly and ask. Before you start looking for catering jobs, there are some things you should know first and below are 5 tips you should learn about catering jobs.
History
Catering jobs typically require you to be one of two things; a server or a food preparer. Everyone regardless of what they started the night as, is expected to stick around for clean up which involves scraping dirty food into the compost , cleaning off tables, gathering up equipment, sweeping food from the kitchen floor, washing dishes and anything else that is required to ensure that the area is as clean as it was when you arrived.
Catering jobs are a bit harder than they look, particularly if you are a server. Being a server requires some skill as you will be dealing with difficult people at times and maneuvering around some tricky environments all while carrying trays, dishes glasses and other items that need to be brought to the table
Catering jobs that involve working in the kitchen preparing food have their difficulties as well. This environment is quite fast-paced because you will be trying to get plates out and onto tables as quickly as possible so everyone can eat their meals together. It also tends to be a bit hot in kitchens so this is another negative aspect of being in a kitchen all night.
Despite the negative things about catering jobs, these jobs can be rewarding too. You will get to attend events that you do not normally get to see, you will meet new people and you will gain valuable experience that can be used to future job searches in the food industry.
It is possible to get catering jobs at more than one catering company at a time in order to get as many hours working as possible. If there is more than one catering company in your town or city, one may be busier than the others at any given time so at least you will have some work with another company when one goes through a slow time.
Features
The flexibility offered by catering jobs is great for people with day jobs and families because typically, you will be called a few days before an event to see if you are available. If you cannot make it, than someone else will be called and you will be called again next time.
