Introduction
In today’s rough economy and tough job market, it is becoming harder and harder to find employment and keep it when we do find it. One type of job that still remains common is in retail jobs. Retail jobs normally require an employee to work in a retail store environment dealing with customers. Dealing with customers generally requires you to help the customer choose a product they want, explain what the product does and how it will benefit the customer, sell the product and help the customer deal with the product once it is purchased. Although it is true that having a certain personality will help you succeed in retail jobs, it is not necessary and can be learned before taking the job or while on the job. The key is knowing what’s expected of you and what you will need to know in order to pass the first step in getting the job, which is the job interview. Some personality traits that allow people to be successful in retail jobs include friendliness, openness, ability to deal with a wide variety of people some of which are difficult to deal with and the ability to sell the product being sold in the store. Below are some tips on how to succeed in retail jobs.
Step 1
First of all, you need to find employment in retail jobs that are available in your area. The best place to look is in your local newspaper, government job banks, online classifieds, local bulletin boards and, of course, word of mouth. Some store may have help wanted signs up and you can even enter a store you would like to work at and ask them if they are hiring.
Step 2
Once you locate employment in retail jobs that you are interested in, you will need to apply for the job and get the interview. You will need to update your resume and a cover letter to showcase any skills that can be applied in retail jobs. If you are good at math, or worked at past jobs where you dealt with the public or even have great phone and writing skills, mention these things as they can be applied to your job.
Step 3
After you get an interview in retail jobs, prepare your answers to possible questions you may be asked and have answers ready to explain any items on your resume.
Step 4
During the interview, be confident, friendly and try to show how well you can interact with customers and convince them that they need to product you will be selling. Make sure to know as much as possible about the company and the product they sell before you go into the interview.
Step 5
If you succeed in getting a job in retail jobs, apply the things you promised you would. Always approach customers on the floor and offer help, learn where everything is kept so you ca find what they want, learn about new products that come into the store, invite customers to come back when they are leaving, be as accommodating as possible and go above and beyond to make them feel comfortable so they will come back and shop there again.
Tips
Working in retail jobs can be rewarding if you apply yourself and work on forming great relationships with your customers. Your hard work will eventually get you a promotion to supervisor or manager if you would like and if you decide to move on and take another job, you would have gained new experience that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.
