International Executive Housekeepers Association offers two different exams to certify housekeepers. Workers may take the test and earn a title of Certified Executive Housekeeper or (CEH). This requires the candidate have a high school diploma. The other title offered is Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH). Candidates for the REH title must hold degree from a four year university. Both certifications need renewal every three years.

Duties

Housekeepers work in a variety of settings. This includes hotels, office buildings, restaurants, hospitals, clinics and private residences. The setting often further divides housekeeping jobs into numerous categories such as maids, janitors and housekeeping supervisors.

Janitors often operate floor cleaning machines. Their duties cover maintaining the cleanliness of floors, carpets, walls and windows. They paint walls, refill supplies in the building's bathrooms and clean the bathrooms. They can also be responsible for getting rid of bugs and rodents in the building.

Maids work performing cleaning in hotels, restaurants, hospitals and private residences. In homes, they may dust the owner's furniture. They vacuum the carpet, sweep the floors, and clean appliances around the home. Many clean garments and bedding by washing and ironing them. Some workers run errands such as shopping for food and paying bills. While working in hotels, maids often clean the rooms and bring guests supplies such as towels, blankets and toiletries.

Housekeeping supervisors oversee other housekeepers. They prepare the workers schedules. They inspect the housekeepers to make sure everyone is doing their duties. They must motivate and supervise their teams.
