Introduction

Public Works Department New York City is responsible for the maintenance of public facilities such as highway systems, recreational facilities, and water and sewer lines. History

Public Works Department New York City was established in 1876 through an amendment to the constitution that was governing the city at the time. It was places under Superintendent of Public Works. Public Works Department replaced canal commission. At that time, it was given authority to execute all the laws that related to the navigation and maintenance of canals except for the functions that were performed by State Engineer and Surveyor. The work of State Engineer and Surveyor was to prepare plans, maps and the estimates for construction and improvement of canals.

Canal Board continued to handle employee hiring and personnel matters. The Canal Board was made up of Superintendent of Public Works, Commissioners of Canal Fund and State Engineer Surveyor. Canal Law in 1903 directed the Canal Board to supervise the enlargement and improvement of various canals. In 1967, Public Works Department was combined with other departments in New York transportation department. As the State continues to grow, the duties that Public Works Department has increased over the years, and has consequently increased the jobs public get.
