Google Mail

Introduction

These days, many people are turning to Google when they open a new email account. Google mail, or Gmail as it is more widely known, is very popular. The company claims Google mail offers more storage than other email providers. It also claims you will receive less spam and more organization. When you sign up for a Google mail account, you also become part of the Google network, which allows you to take advantage of many other Google features and services. Let's take a look at how to open a Google mail account.

Step 1

To start, you will need to go to the Google homepage. To do this, just type www.Google.com in your web browswer. At the top of the left hand side of the page, you will find a number of options, such as "images" and "maps," that will take you to various other Google websites. Click on the one that says "Gmail," and it will take you a sign-in page that provides you with some information about Gmail's features.

 

Step 2

If you do not already have account sign-in information, click on the red "Create an Account" box in the top right hand corner of the Google mail sign-in page. This will take you to a page titled "Create a New Google Account."  There you will fill in various pieces of information about yourself, such as your name, date of birth, gender, mobile phone number and an alternative email address. Some of this information is optional. You will also choose a unique user name and password. Finally, you will need to accept Google's terms of service before clicking "next step" at the bottom of the page.

 

Step 3

Once you have filled in your information, you will go to the next page titled "Create Your Profile." The page explains what a Google profile is and explains Google+, Google's social networking service. It also allows you to upload a profile picture. You can opt out of a adding a profile picture if you choose not and come back to do it later. Once you've uploaded your picture or decided not to, click on "next step" and you will be taken to the final page of the Google mail set-up process.

Step 4

The final page in the process should have the word "Welcome" followed by your name. Here you will click on "Continue to Gmail," and it will take you directly to your new email account. You will be greeted with a few new emails. These are simply the Google team welcoming you and providing some extra information that can help you get more from your Google mail account.

Step 5

Once you have set up your Google mail account, you can learn more about and experiment with the various features the system has to offer. You can set up folders to store and archive your incoming emails. You can customize your account with various colors and themes if you do not like the plain white background. Google will also suggest you make use of its Google+ social networking service, its chat services or connect your Google mail account to your mobile phone. All of these are optional, of course.

Tips

Remember to never give your password to anyone. Also, it's good to provide Google with some sort of back-up contact information, such as an alternative email address or your mobile phone number, so that you do not get locked out of your account.
