When you sign up for an email subscription with a site, you expect to receive emails of interest to you. Sometimes, the emails may not suit your needs and you need to email opt out of a mailing list. When you do this, your email address is usually removed from the mailing list within minutes of your request to email opt out. Some mailing lists may still contact you up to 10 days after you have initiated the process to email opt out of a subscription. In addition to opting out of those emails that you receive from lists you signed up for, you can opt out of emails from your spam mail folder. Once you have opted out, you can always go back in and sign up for a new subscription if you feel at a later time that you want to join the list again.

Step 1

Launch either your email client or a Web browser to access your email. Email clients include programs such as Outlook Express and Mozilla Thunderbird. If you are choosing to access your email through a Web browser, you can choose any browser that is currently installed on your computer including Internet Explorer or Google Chrome.

Step 2

Log into your email account if you are accessing it through a Web browser. You will need to provide your user name or complete email address and your password. If you cannot remember your login information, you will need to click the indicated link to request help with obtaining your login information.

Step 3

Open your inbox and click the message on which you want to email opt out of. If you are unable to locate the email in your inbox, check your spam folder. Wait for the email to fully-load before attempting to make any changes or start the email opt process.

Step 4

Search the email for an “Unsubscribe” or “Update Email Preferences” link. The link should be located at the bottom of the email or at the top under the subject line. The link is a clickable link that will help you to email opt out of unwanted messages. If you are unable to find the link, read the disclaimer section at the bottom of the email to determine if you have to undertake other steps to email opt out of the mailing list to which you are subscribed.

Step 5

Click the “Unsubscribe” or “Update Email Preferences” link to remove yourself from the mailing list. When you click on the link to start the email opt out process, a new window or tab will open. The new window will display your current subscription to the mailing list. Read the information carefully and select the option to email opt out of the mailing list. Some sites may require you to un-check the emails you do not want to receive. In some instances, you may receive a confirmation email to let you know you have been successfully been email opt out of the list.

Tips

Read everything before clicking. Some spam messages are sent as part of phishing. If you are unsure of an email, do not click on any links within the message.
